Gabriela: Discovering Sintra’s Charm and Lisbon’s History

Hi there! I can’t believe that my third week in Lisbon is over! Just like my weeks before, my weekdays were filled with work. Therefore, I used my last weekend to explore the city as much as I could for the last time.

On Saturday, I took a day trip to Sintra, a charming town outside of Lisbon. Despite being surprised by a sudden rain, the beauty of Sintra shone through. Its marvellous streets and medieval, yet romantic, atmosphere made every corner a delight to explore.

My first stop was the National Palace of Sintra, a stunning example of the town's rich history. In the afternoon, I visited the probably most famous landmark: the Pena Palace. Known for its striking red and yellow facades, the palace was as magnificent as I had imagined. Though it was crowded with tourists, it was still worth the visit. A tip for future visitors: buy your tickets online in advance and aim for a morning slot to avoid the crowds.

On Sunday, I explored the Aljube Museum, a former prison that now serves as a stark reminder of Portugal’s dictatorial past. It was a memorable experience, offering deep insights into a dark period of Portugal’s history. I spent the afternoon at the Museum of São Roque, which features an impressive collection of catholic art and artifacts.

Overall, it was a fantastic final weekend in Lisbon. From the historical depth of the Aljube Museum to the fairytale allure of Sintra, every moment was enriching and memorable. See you next week for the last time!
